존 루터 (John Milford Rutter, 1945~ , 英)


1945년 런던에서 출생. 대중적이면서도 고전적인 영국음악의 전형적인 형태를 가진 작품을 발표하였다. 작품의 선율이 아름답고 매력적이어서 영국 미국 캐나다 등지에서 많이 연주되며, 한국 교회에도 널리 알려져 있다.

소규모의 합창곡들을 많이 작곡하였으며 《레퀴엠 Requiem》(1985),《 Magnificat》 (1990),《Psalmfest》(1993),《European Sacred Music》(1996) 등과 같은 규모가 큰 작품을 발표하였다. 이밖에《피아노 협주곡》등의 기악곡, 어린이 오페라, 텔레비전을 위한 음악, 킹스 싱어스(King's Singers)와 필립 존스 관악대(Philip Jones Brass Ensemble)를 위한 음악도 작곡하였다.

1975∼1979년 클레어 컬리지의 학장으로 재직하면서 동시에 합창지휘자를 맡아, 방송·음반 등의 분야에서 활발한 활동을 벌였다. 학장 재임 이후에는 '케임브리지 싱어스(Cambridge Singers)'라는 소규모의 직업 합창단을 조직하여 지휘를 맡았고 작품 활동에도 힘을 기울였다.

1980년 영국 웨스트민스터대성당 성가대 명예감독이 되었고, 1988년 영국 최고의 교회 음악인으로 선정되었다. 1996년 캔터베리 대주교가 수여하는 음악 박사학위를 받았으며, 1997년 한국을 방문하여 서울 모테트합창단을 지휘하기도 하였다.
